Great Marriage Communication

Marriage Communication HelpTo have a good marriage communication is crucial.  The emotional intimacy good communication habits creates is a key ingredient to maintaining the feelings of closeness in a relationship. Talking about both the major events in life and the little day to day things helps strengthen the bond between a couple.

A breakdown in marriage communication is often the first sign of danger in the relationship. The problem is many couples don’t even recognize the problem until it becomes a big one.  They just get caught up in all of the stresses and cares of life and  start ignoring and neglecting each other. They may even tell themselves they’ll make it up when things calm down a little.  The problem is while life is rushing past, their marriages are slowly crumbling.

Keeping Love Alive

What can you do to make sure you aren’t letting your marriage slip away because of a lack of communication?  Use the points below to get your marriage communication score up…

Communicate With Respect:

Everybody communicates differently.  For some people, being sarcastic is meant as a way of kidding and joking.  For others it can be a way to cover up resentfulness or pain. This can really hurt a marraige.  It can be very discouraging to try to have a serious talk with your spouse when you continually get a cynical, sarcastic remark in response.  Sure, joking and cutting up can be signs of a comfortable, healthy relationship, but sometimes your spouse needs to know that you value and respect their thoughts. It’s a fine line but it’s very real.

Marriage Communication Takes Time:

Believe it or not, the average amount of time most couples spend really engaged in any meaningful conversation is only 15 minutes a week.  No wonder marriage communication problems are such a common issue for many couples. If you want to avoid a divorce and beat the statistics, you need to spend some time every day really talking and listening to your spouse.  Turn off the tube, log off the computer and have a real, live conversation.  Even 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference in your marriage.

Just Be Honest:

Honesty is one of the foundations of a good marriage.  Couples need to know they can trust each other to be truthful and honest.  That doesn’t just mean not lying to each other, it means not keeping things from each other either.  Healthy marriage communication includes telling each other both good news and not so good news.  If you screw up, for instance, own up to it. An honest apology is a lot better than trying to hide something from your spouse.  Honesty in all your marriage communication paves the way for forgiveness and understanding in the relationship.

Be A Good Listener:

Marriage communication is not all about talking.  In fact, one of the most important skills you can have is to be a good listener.  Give each other time to get your thoughts out with no interruptions.  Stay engaged in the conversation. Asking questions can let your spouse know you care about what they are saying.  Just realize that both of you have something to contribute to the relationship, so you should value each other’s viewpoints.

If your marriage is already in enough trouble that divorce is a possibility, it is even more critical to pay attention to communication issues.  Be aware that how you say something is often more important than what you say. Be mindful of your tone of voice and your body language, especially when involved in an arguement.  When emotions are already on edge you should make a special effort to remain calm and respectful, even if you are the only one doing so.

These points are pretty basic and really apply to most relationships, not just marriages.  They are especially important for married couples because of the unique challenges they face.  So whether you are struggling to avoid divorce or just want to get along with your spouse better, one of the best things you can do is focus on your marriage communication.
